That’s not to say that these brief skirmishes are completely devoid of meaning, though even when it’s running on autopilot, Haikyuu’s a good enough story that it’s always got something interesting going on in the background. The future will test these skills against opponents who are actually worthy of them, but for now, it’s just good to see them soar again. The effort they put in over the past half-season has paid off in spades they’re banging out awesome plays one after the other, freak quicks and team attacks and Hinata’s new arsenal of versatile mid-air battle tactics all rattling off with the cathartic smash they deserve. And on that level, it’s another rousing success, because god damn is it good to see our boys at the top of their game again. It’s mostly an excuse to show off how far Karasuno’s come, pitting them up against weak opponents that allow them to make the fullest use of their new talents and skills. So the qualifying prelims of the spring tournament are a pretty low-key affair, with our newly jazzed crows going up against a pair of milquetoast teams who clearly don’t have the skills to make it in the big leagues. Coming off that epic training camp, they’re stronger and surer than ever before, and now, it’s time to put that newfound confidence into practice. It’s been really damn good, with some of Haikyuu’s best dramatic beats yet, but by now, our heroes have earned a bit of a breather. The first half of this season has been dominated by a sense of pushing back against that regret, propelling off the failures of the past and becoming something stronger in the aftermath. in those two weeks, you became jj’s top priority, at all times.Įver since their crushing almost-victory against Aoba Josei, Karasuno’s been fighting to get back on the upswing. he was always glancing in your direction when you wandered off for a moment, and texting you on days you spent with your family to make sure it wasn’t going too terribly, and tossing a sweatshirt toward you when he felt you shiver under his arm during a night on the hms pogue. jj found himself constantly wanting to make sure you were okay during those two weeks. certain about whatever you’d been thinking about earlier at the boneyard, whether it was him, or the pogues, or anything else. it wasn’t until you two started walking back to john b’s later in the night that he addressed it. “you good to go back to jb’s?” he’d ask, trying not to be too specific with his words, but still wanting to be certain that you were certain. when you didn’t do anything but slip your hand into his, though, he chose to let it go for the time being. it was a look that jj could only connect with panic, uncertainty, nervousness.
he’d felt your pulse jump under his lips, and when he looked up to check that you were alright with being called his girl, he saw the look on your face. Though you didn’t realize it, jj noticed your change in emotion right away.
fuck, i don’t even wanna lose his friends, let alone lose him. where is this gonna go after i go back home? do i just lose him? you’d suddenly wonder, looking around at your new friends to avoid making eye contact with jj. unlike the nickname of princess, though, being his girl stirred up some new feelings for you.
he grumbled inaudibly again, then groaned when john b and sarah began asking him questions about what they’d just witnessed. “y/n made me break the rules of the jungle! okay? that’s it! my girl’s a mainlander, and she follows the rules of mainland society! she doesn’t get it! how is that my fault?!” everyone would laugh at the outburst, and your heart did another backflip when jj called you his girl. knowing what was about to happen, jj buried his head in your neck (after checking to make sure rafe and his pawns weren’t watching anymore). “i hate you,” he’d grumble into your neck, prompting you to run a hand through his hair with a smile as you told him he was wrong. As john b and sarah walked up to the group, you and jj took your own seats on the log next to pope and kie’s.
